Sweetie of the Day - January 20th, 2014

Today is the birthday of one amazing Jackson DeForest Kelley, known affectionately to friends as De, best known for his role as Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy on the original Star Trek.

Following his work with Star Trek, De went into semi-retirement, writing poetry and supporting worth causes and lending a hand to charity drives and shows. A long-time and committed champion of animal rights, Kelley and his wife of 54 years supported the North Shore Animal League, a not-for-profit animal shelter on Long Island, and a memorial fund in his honour was made for the organization. In addition, De helped develop a Fellowship fund at Harvard Medical School, acknowledging the impact his character had on young aspiring doctors everywhere.

But his work and causes aside, De’s goodness was also an understated, humble one. De was warm, compassionate, and a true Southern gentleman. He treated everyone with kindness and always had a gentle word and a smile; he and his loving wife were inspirations both on-screen and off right up until their deaths.

In celebration of his birthday, and for his warmth, devotion, and genuine kindness, DeForest Kelley is our sweetie of the day.
