Sometimes a feeling is all we humans have to go on.
#hey you wanna know something painful#out of all of those smiles#there are maybe only one or two#that are not self-deprecating and self-mocking#that are not full of loathing and frustrating that he’s directing at himself#it’s worse at first of course#when he’s at his lowest point in the bar#getting plastered and then knocked around because he doesn’t have enough self-preservation instinct to keep his mouth shut#but that trend of sort of#disbelief in himself#doesn’t just disappear when he joins starfleet#it persists#because even when he’s finally accomplished something so big#he still doesn’t quite believe#that he’s worth it#that he’s worth all of pike’s time and effort and guidance#that he’s worth getting this second chance#that he’s worth being /saved/ from half a lifetime spent wasting away in a little town accomplishing nothing because he can’t see a light to#follow#to get ahead#no#he’s spent too many years hiding doubt behind brash confidence and cockiness#but those wounds cut a little too deep to heal quickly (via arthurpoo)
