Deep Space Nine.

You want Deep Space Nine.

DS9 does not have any canon LGBT+ characters. Actor intent got overridden and eclipsed by homophobic producers and writers. As much as we would love to credit actors for playing characters as a certain sexuality ex-post-facto, we need to recognize that their intent does not make their characters queer in the eyes of the show. In the eyes of fans? In headcanon and personal theory? Yes. Those characters can absolutely be queer. But in the eyes of the show and its creators? No. There is no representation there.

EXCEPT!

The woman Jadzia is kissing is an ex from a relationship that a previous MALE host had.  Sure, the kiss is LGBT, but the foundation relationship is pure cishet.

From the script:

“DAX: The irony is, you and I have more in common than Torias and Nilani ever did.”

its shit that they had to use a loophole to have lgbt r/ship but it doesnt mean its any less lgbt

“the foundation relationship is pure cishet” are you fucking kidding me, I’m sorry I didn’t want to get involved with this discourse but do you realize how fucking insulting that is?? Like, how often are wlw (both lesbian and bi/pan) told that their romantic relationships with women don’t “really count” because of past relationships with men? like I’m sorry but no one would be fucking arguing this point if it were two men who kissed, there is no way to spin that as “not really gay uwu” and I am saying this as a queer nonbinary man.

empresshoshisato is right, like it is absolutely, purposefully shown that the two have feelings for each other unrelated to those of their previous hosts, but you know what if you want to make this an argument about “real implications” outside of the world of the show and “legitimate queerness” or whatever the fuck, just look at all the threatening phone calls the producers got after airing that episode! I don’t have a link but there was a post going around a few months back that quoted one guy as saying “you’re ruining my kids making them watch two women kiss like that” but I guess that was just “misdirected” homophobia right?? jesus fucking christ like what the fuck do you people think being gay even is? that it’s solely determined by your Pure Inner Feelings and has nothing to do with your actions and how you’re received by the world? like yes it is a matter of self-identification but identification means identifying with something, and in this case that’s an attraction to people of the same gender! kissing is an expression of attraction! it is a romantic thing that a straight woman would not do with another woman! for fuck’s sake get your head out of your ass!

listen I promise I am not a hostile person, I’m just really, really fed up with this Bad Discourse and it gets me worked up. if you would like clarification on any of these points feel free to message me, but I am not going to argue about this.
