Theory: Porthos is young Odo. Odo landed on earth but was immediately taken in by dogs, so his first form was dogs, then he got hit by (random cosmic radiation that can effect change king biology) and he got stuck as a dog for a long time, but then it eventually gets reversed and he gets flung to Bajor where he restarted life to become the Odo we know.
