So this is from one of my all-time favourite TNG episodes, “Disaster”. It’s surprisingly light-hearted for a story where the whole ship gets trashed (by a “quantum filament,” a totally real scientific phenomenon for sure) and everyone gets stuck in mild fish-out-of-water peril for the next 40 minutes. So Worf has to deliver a baby, and Troi has to take command when the ranking bridge redshirt eats it, and poor Captain Picard—who is deeply, deeply uncomfortable around children—ends up stuck in an elevator with three science fair winners and his ankle broken, so he deputizes the kids as his temporary “crew” to keep them from completely losing their shit.

I’ve probably seen this one dozens of times since 1992 or ’93, and here I’ve always thought, “Aww, Picard’s not as bad with kids as he thinks!” But I think he’s actually doing this for himself? Because he only knows one way to relate to other human beings? And like… oh my god, Jean-Luc, you can’t even talk to an 11-year-old in a life or death situation without field promoting her to lieutenant first you absolute trainwreck
