Alright, so I work at a coffee shop and I’ve got a 50-ish year-old customer who likes to chat with me throughout my shift. We were talking about Star Trek and he brought up how important Nichelle Nichols was. He said,
“MLK Jr called her up personally to ask her to stay on the show because she was third in command and that no black woman on tv could boast of that than her.”
I agreed but said that I was pretty sure Scotty was third in command. And after that, like, Sulu or something.
He was adamant though, and said,
“Well, I would know, I mean I saw it when it first aired.”
Yeah buddy? Well I saw it last night.
So tired of old dudes telling me I don’t know Star Trek like they do 🙄

Back in my day, we had to IMAGINE what Kirk would say to a real astronaut, and we appreciated those little fantasies more than you millenials could ever imagine. Let me tell you, you don’t REALLY understand Star Trek until you’ve gone to a tiny local convention in a homemade Spock costume and gotten thrown out of a bar for getting into a fight over the nature of Kirk and Spock’s relationship!
