deep space nine is really well designed and also looks terrible like you can feel the warm static of the vhs tape in your hands while you watch it. everything is just tangibly grubby you can smell the carpets through the stream. it’s evocative. all of this is a compliment. it’s expressionistic

i love the TOS episodes that lean into more theatrical(-inspired) lighting and set design……….the lighting design in “what are little girls made of?” feels SO german expressionistic (i won’t go so far as to say cabinet of dr. caligari-esque but i could see the similarity)……….“the empath” is a black box surrealist one-act which was one of deforest kelley’s favorite episodes partially because of the dramatic elements being used……….the way that theatricality and performance of identity as themes are reflected in the set design for “the conscience of the king,” especially with the performance of a play for an audience in a television program………..the way that in “spectre of the gun” kirk spock bones scotty and chekov are forced to play roles in the gunfight at the OK corral in a barebones set that heightens the sense of the performative in the whole episode…………love when other media engages with theatrically-inspired design choices in ways that are interesting when thinking about the themes of an episode and/or the show overall

like this is the ideal design; it’s not naturalistic or cinematic, it’s very specific light and set design based in the world of the theatrically-inspired

That one shot in ENT where Archer is facing the screen and then Shran’s antennae unfurl above his head? Yeah, that’s the best shot in Star Trek.

THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT
